Blake paced his hotel room. Soon. He would need to make his move soon. He searched his reflection in the mirror. Contacts made his eyes brown and his dark, short hair was now spiked and tipped with blonde highlights. How did women do this? A nose piercing was fake but looked convincing enough. His loose t-shirt obscured his muscular build, and the plaid vest hid his gun. The sneakers on his feet were uncomfortable. The bandage was off his arm and the stitches were gnarly and foreboding. He was distinctive and memorable and so unlike his normal self he figured heâd be able to leave easily.
His team was in place at the ranch, the safe house, and here in Dallas. Not knowing where the mole was made it all tricky. Blake hoped they would flush him out quickly so he could resume his life as an unassuming cowboy with his wife, horses, and cattle. Wide open skies and breathtaking mountains awaited him away from this concrete jungle and the intrigue of politics and oil. He grabbed his duffle and swung it over his shoulder. Exiting his room, he took the stairs down and left through the side door of the hotel. The rental company would be collecting his vehicle later. The bike had been returned. He was free to disappear and find out what was really going on at Indoil.
He ended up down by an old abandoned warehouse and Slam-Dunk melted from the shadows to let him know he was there.
âHowâs the arm?â
âHurts. Iâll survive.â
âArenât you supposed to keep it bandaged? Protect those stitches?â
Blake checked out his partner. âDecided to man up today?â
âDonât ever ask me to go undercover as a woman again. It was brutal.â
Grinning, Blake elbowed his friend. âI still say you have the legs for it. And your cleavage could make many a man overlook your ugly mug.â
Slam-Dunk gave a limp hand and a wink as he raised his voice an octave to respond. âI love it when you talk dirty to me, Blakey. It gets my motor running.â
Blake chuckled. âLetâs focus on business. What do you know?â
âThereâs a caravan of oil tankers due in tonight. Sounds as though itâs a pick up. Theyâll take it out to the ocean to wait until prices go up.â
âCreating a shortage of our own fuel?â
âPrices rise and the government can push for more drilling here because we cannot meet the demand, and it would be cheaper than relying on foreign oil.â
âCrazy-stupid.â
âAnd brilliant.â
âSo how do we stop it?â
âI donât know that we can.â
âCan we call in some favors?â
âFormer SEALs?â
âExactly.â
âNot enough time, Maverick. Even if you did, it would be impossible to disable that many tankers. One, maybe, but weâre talking eight.â
âHow many tons of oil does that represent?â
âThree hundred, eighteen thousand per vessel.â
Blake let out a low whistle. âWe can track âem.â
âThese former SEALs could do that on short notice.â
âMake the call and get âer done. Iâm going to swing a deal to buy a tanker of oil.â
Slam-Dunk frowned. âWhy?â
âWhy else?â
âThen what?â
âThen I need to go flush out a mole.
